making torrijas
as an act of resistance
dance-theater / 50 min
the earth is not only dust, stones and mud, but also the hands that plowed it, the feet that danced on it, the blood that watered it or the stories that narrated it. standing on it, i wonder about those who once trod the same earth I now tread. what were their worries? their joys, their sorrows? what is left of them in me? in a journey through the time of my personal and family stories and the space of the tiétar valley of ávila, a tale of reconnection with lost roots unfolds as well as an optimistic vindication of the subversive potential of tradition to build futures of freedom, equality and justice.
making torrijas as an act of resistance is a research project on tradition, memory and identity born as the performative part of a theoretical-practical research initiated within the framework of the master in embodied artistic research at the royal conservatory of antwerp, and articulated as a dance-theater piece that combines past, present and future, folklore, history and fiction as a starting point to reflect on issues such as historical memory, the emptied spain or rural queer identities.
supported with residencies by konvent, the maría pagés choreographic centre and la nave del duende, it was awarded summa cum laude honors as a master's thesis by a professional jury, and received a special mention at the young art contest 2022 by the junta de castilla y león.
